Class-Magnoliopsida
Order-Caryophyliales
Family-Cactaceae
Genus-Pediocactus
Species-peeblesianus
Pincushion cacti are small 8" cacti with red and white spines that bloom in the summer into yellow and pink flowers. They are located in the Sonoran Desert, Arizona, California. They are well suited for these dry places because they have resevoirs for the little water that falls and the full sunlight. The temperature in their habitats is usually hot, dry, and arid. Again, they use photosynthesis to make food for themselves. Since there is often long droughts, they compete with other cacti for water. While this ecosystem is not the best suited, the organisms within it have adapted by tapping into the cacti's water reservoirs and fruit.
